AT&T Expands Fiber To A Dozen More Metros - Boosting Its 5G Efforts

December 13, 2018

AT&T Inc. unveiled 12 new metropolitan areas for its fiber service part of a push that should help the next-generation of wireless networks, as well.

The company recently said more cities will get ultra-high-speed broadband options, bringing its total to 84 in the U.S., according to a statement on its website. The new metros are located across the South and span Texas, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi and South Carolina. Already, fiber is available in several big metros such as Dallas, Chicago and San Francisco.

While residents of those areas may welcome the new service, it also serves to help AT&T’s push into 5G, new tech that promises speeds and responsiveness that will shake up the industry. AT&T, along with its rivals, are investing in the next generation of networks in the hopes of retaining and wooing new customers. While 5G is wireless, the fiber can help connect the infrastructure to deliver the zippier features, the company said.

“The success of mobile 5G relies on a quality fiber connection to the wireless towers or small cells, which then translate the fiber connection into an ultra-fast wireless signal for customers,” the company said. “By putting fiber at the core of our wired and wireless networks, we’ve been laying the foundation for our 5G wireless connectivity.”
