Fiber Optic Network To Be Built Across West Virginia

October 28, 2018

Telecommunications company Zayo Group recently announced that it will build a fiber-optic network that will stretch across part of West Virginia.

Jack Waters, the company’s chief technology officer, said in a press conference hosted by Gov. Jim Justice, that the network will run across the state and connect Columbus, Ohio, to Ashburn, Virginia.

“It’s pretty unique, when you think about it,” Waters said. “I’ve been building fiber networks for a long, long time. The way we used to do it is we used to pick where all the people live — the big, big, big markets — and connect them up. It turns out that these two end points are where the new economy is.”

Construction on the network is expected to begin early next year, and Waters said it could take anywhere from two to three years to complete.

The exact route of the network hasn’t been decided yet, but it should stretch about 200 miles across the state.

Justice said that, in exchange for access to the state’s rights of way, Zayo would be provide high-quality fiber to the state.
