This Is The Self-Flying Taxi Audi Is Building With Airbus

November 28, 2018

Audi and Airbus has unveiled its autonomous flying taxi at Drone Week in Amsterdam, and it actually works--at least the scale model does.

The two companies announced earlier this year that they partnered to build and commercialize a flying robo-taxi service, and Pop.Up Next is their answer to the flying car problem that no one is talking about. It's a mash up of a drone and a modular electric car that picks up a passenger in a detachable pod, autonomously flies him to a location, and places the pod on top of an electric vehicle frame that then delivers him to a destination, creating a driverless and seamless experience that never requires the occupant to navigate or even touch ground.

Audi has been testing its concept using a 1:4 scale model of the vehicle in South America, and this week gave its first public test flight. It was able to demonstrate that the Pop.Up Next drone could accurately place a passenger capsule on the vehicle base, and successfully drive off the testing grounds autonomously.
