UTOPIA Fiber Network Launches throughout Utah's Layton City
September 22, 2018
Utah’s local fiber internet provider, announced an agreement with Layton City for the rapid completion of UTOPIA Fiber’s network for the residents of Layton. Currently, about half of Layton is wired with UTOPIA Fiber’s net-neutral, high speed fiber internet connection. This new agreement will ensure the rest of the city is connected to UTOPIA Fiber within 24 months.
“We are so excited to ramp up our timeline in Layton,” said UTOPIA Fiber’s Executive Director, Roger Timmerman. “Soon, every Layton resident and business will have access to the fastest internet speeds in America.”
24 Months to Completion UTOPIA Fiber offers residential services up to 10 Gbps and 100 Gbps for businesses. Currently, about half of Layton City can connect to UTOPIA Fiber and construction continues at a steady pace. Despite the progress made, Layton residents continue to request UTOPIA Fiber be available sooner. Due to these concerns and strong market demand, this agreement allows UTOPIA Fiber to build even faster by rolling out new areas of Layton on a monthly basis, with all areas having access within 24 months.
“We are here to serve our communities and provide the best possible solutions for the citizens and businesses that we serve,” Timmerman said.
Open Access Network UTOPIA Fiber is an inter-local entity owned and operated by Layton City, along with 10 other cities, and acts as a public asset like roads or water systems. UTOPIA Fiber projects are open-access, meaning it makes the fiber system available to local and regional providers rather than competing with private providers. Layton residents can get a fiber connection starting at $65/month for 250/250 Mbps and have the option to choose from 10 local competing providers that run on UTOPIA Fiber’s network.
“Our network solves the Net Neutrality issue where providers are throttling service speeds or not allowing users to view content from competitors.” Timmerman says. “Resident’s homes are hard-wired to the fastest and top-rated fiber network in Utah, where they can choose from a variety of net-neutral service providers.”
